Biological Description Tenofovir is a selective antiretroviral agent which functions as a HIV reverse transcriptase inhibitor. Tenofovir functions by inhibiting the replication of this DNA. Prevents cytotoxicity in SIV-infected C-8166 cells in vitro (IC50 = 1.5 μM). Tenofovir may reduce (not cure) the amount of HIV in the blood and increase the number of CD4 cells (T-cells) in the blood.
