Description
An important cofactor in the transfer of one-carbon moieties and plays a major role in the formation of S-adenosyl methionine, the universal methyl donor, as well as in the synthesis and repair of DNA and RNA. Therefore, folate depletion causes disruption of DNA integrity and repair which enhances carcinogenesis by altering the expression of critical tumor suppressor genes. Studies show that folate supplementation suppresses colorectal carcinogenesis and reduces the risk of pancreatic and breast cancer.
